The Supreme Order of Christ

The Supreme Order of Christ: Established in 1319, The Supreme Order of Christ is the highest papal order of knighthood awarded by the Pope. Traditionally bestowed upon Catholic heads of state, this prestigious honor recognizes exceptional service to the Church. The order was restructured by Pope Pius X in 1905, making it the most senior papal honor. However, its conferral has been rare since Pope Paul VI restricted its use in 1966 to commemorate very special occasions. The last public award was made in 1987, and the order has been dormant since the death of King Baudouin of Belgium in 1993
