Smith Patrick, KSS

1914 – 2000. From Stradone, Co. Cavan, egg marketing inspector with the Dept of Agriculture and Food. He was one of the 670 who  fought in the Spanish Civil War on the Nationalist side; Paddy was a member of D Company of the XV Bandera. From a family of 8, his mother died young. Educated in Ballyhaise Agricultural College he qualified as a butter maker. Then went to work in Nore creamery in Thomastown Co Kilkenny and met his wife Evelyn. Went to Spain via Belfast. On return his passport excluded him from re-entry to Spain. He served from 1937 – 1979 with the Dept of Agriculture and Food, living in Loughrea. Involved in fly-fishing and the local boxing club.   Honorary Life Member Knights of St Columbanus. Pioneer TAA, Legion of Mary, Sacred Heart Solidity, GAA, Sup Warden KSC. Conferred June 1989 in the Cathedral Loughrea.  He is buried in Loughrea., having died 1 april, 2000. Reference  “the Irish and the Spanish Civil War”  Robert Stradling,  Mandolin, 1999.
