Obit May, 2014 aged 79. Former chairman of the diocesan finance committee. In accepting the papal honour, Mr. Furlong said it was a privilege to have been involved in the diocesan finance committee over the years - 'years that brought their share of challenges and blessings, years in which I have enjoyed great co-operation and support'. He began a banking career in 1953 after completing his secondary school education at St. Peter's College. He worked with Bank of Ireland for the next 20 years mostly in Waterford City where he became branch manager from 1971 to 1973. In 1973, he was appointed regional manager in the north west region and in 1976, he returned to Wexford as Regional Manager for the south east, retiring in June 1995. Outside the bank, Ronan was an active member of Wexford Chamber of Commerce, a founder member and first president of Wexford Rotary Club in 1979 and a past president of St. Peter's PPU with which he worked hard to provide a new sports complex for the students. He also served on the Boards of Management of St. Peter's and Loreto secondary schools. In retirement, he directed his attention to community needs. He was an active member of the Friends of St. Patrick's School, Enniscorthy and very involved with the Friends of Wexford General Hospital campaign to provide a new cancer care unit for the hospital.
